Churches in Bulgaria

Bulgaria, Sofia, Alexander Nevsky Cathedral Church in the early evening. The cathedral had recently had the gold leaf on the domes replaced - stunning.

I love churches anyway, so it was the obvious first place for me to visit wherever we went in Bulgaria, and what an aesthetic treat for me that was. A lot of thought, care and love have evidently gone into the building, internal decoration and preservation of these wonderful monuments to the Lord, with little expense spared - not that that is important.

Religion in Bulgaria is predominantly Christian Orthodox, and the freedom of religious choice, and the equality of religions, are included in the Bulgarian Constitution.

The icons within each church are decorated in gold leaf, and it was no surprise for me to hear - sadly - that criminals were stealing them from the churches and selling them off in Germany.

The Alexander Nevski (Nevsky) Cathedral is breathtaking, and so - quite honestly - are all the churches I visited in Bulgaria.
