The Town of Dobrich in the Province of Dobrich,
Bulgaria.

Bulgaria, Ferdinand of Bulgaria and his family - Bulgarian
Royal Family in the 1910's.
Dobrich is a Bulgarian Town, and is also the administrative centre
of the Province (Oblast) of Dobrich. The town has the highest population
of any town in Bulgaria, and is home to approximately 110,000 inhabitants.
The first evidence of inhabitancy of this area dates back to the
4th century B.C. in the form of settlement ruins.
Between 1913 and 1940, Dobrich was officially a part of Romania,
and renamed as Bazargic, but was reclaimed for Bulgaria by the
Bulgarian Army on 27th January 1940 – the present day date
of the town’s annual festivities.
Renamed Tolbukhin during its’ communist days, the name was
only changed back to Dobrich as recently as 1990.
The Art Gallery in the town has an interesting and chequered history,
having once been the judicial courts, police station and communist
party offices.
Known as the ‘old town’ and now a part of the new
town, are about 30 workshops – run by traditional crafts
people, and producing – amongst other things – woodcarvings,
copper goods, items of gold, , and traditional Bulgarian clothing.
On your travels around the town you may notice that many of the
dead trees – which were previously an eyesore – have
now been turned into pieces of carved art by Daniel Bodichev.
Dobrich Park is a delight – especially in bloom, and there
are the usual beautiful churches associated with all Bulgarian
towns. St George Church stands out amongst the places of worship
in the town.
