Karnobat is in the Province of Burgas (Bourgas) in the south east of Bulgaria, and to the south of the town are the Hisar Hills. The municipality of Karnobat includes one town and twenty nine villages, with a total population of about 31,000 people, of which approximately 21,000 live in the town of Karnobat.

There is evidence of human activity in the area that can be traced back to Neolithic times, since which time it has prospered and become a vibrant and successful settlement.

In 1153 Muhammad al-Idrisi - an Arabic academic - mentioned the town in writing, and is as far as we know the first time it was named in any written document.

At different times in history - and under different regimes - Karnobat has gone under several names, including: Karnovo, Karinovassa and Karinabad.

The area around Karnobat witnessed many battles in the 7th century, when the Bulgarians fought against the powers of Byzantium.

The enchanting St. Ioan Theologian Church was built in 1838, and is still the absolute jewel in the crown of Karnobat Square.

During the Russian/Turkish War between 1877-78, the area fell victim to ruthless non-regular Turkish Army recruits - named bashi-bazouks - and also the Circassians. Karnobat was at last liberated on the 24th January 1878, thus paving the way for major socio-economic changes.

In the old part of the town are the remains of a 15th century Turkish Baths. The Clock Tower near the public baths was built in 1874 as a symbol of the revival of the crafts centre.

Accomodation in Karnobat is split between three types of accomodation; communist type concrete apartments, more modern apartments, and town houses with gardens. To look outside at the concrete style apartments belies the quality and decor of what you may find inside, where many have been tastefully renovated, and are now very modern living spaces. The town houses are in better condition than the houses that you might expect to find in a village, and there are constantly signs of building and upgrading work.

There are little signs of the historic turbulence of this area now, and as you stroll around the town centre, witnessing people quietly going about their business, and others enjoying a drink, or a meal, sitting in the busy outdoor cafes. There is a feeling of calm and tranquility wherever you wander around Karnobat, that I will always associate with this amiable town and its' people.

Karnobat was the first town that I really visited in Bulgaria, and I was - and remain - impressed and won over by all that Karnobat - and her friendly people - has to offer.
